The most important blood used when breeding the dog were those of the Bulldog and the Mastiff. The Bullmastiff combined their best qualities, such as significant size, and, therefore, strength, and endurance, devotion to its owner, and diligence. At the same time, the new breed appeared to be much faster than the Mastiff and not as blood seeking as the Bulldog. The Bullmastiff helped gamekeepers and was also used as a guardian and a police dog.

Even today Bullmastiffs are often called Gamekeeper's Nightdogs.

The first breed club appeared in Great Britain. In was established in 1925 as the Midland Bull and Mastiff Club. Later it was renamed due the changes in the breed name. Nowadays, it is known as the British Bullmastiff League.

In 1934, the Bullmastiff entered the canine world of the United States. The AKC recognized the breed and started to promote it in the country in joint efforts with the American Bullmastiff Association. Since that time, the association acquired many regional clubs that help to take care of the welfare of the breed. Bullmastiffs are now popular as working dogs and make good watchdogs and companions.
