Mastiff

The Mastiff, also commonly known as the English Mastiff, is believed to have sprung from the Alaunt – an ancient Molosser-type dog. Actually, the Mastiff – is the oldest dog in Britain, which has contributed its gene to nearly all Bulldog-type dogs of today. The Mastiff is one of the largest and most powerful dogs in the world. Mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records is a Mastiff named Zobra, weighing over 315lbs.

Mastiffs are very muscular and strong dogs. They have broad skulls, deep chests, powerful limbs and very strong jaws. These dogs bear a characteristic square overall appearance, and they have been widely used in various bloody sports throughout history, such as bull baiting, bear baiting, dog fighting, and lion baiting. Today, these activities are not permitted, so modern Mastiffs are popular as pets.

Despite their large size and somewhat menacing appearance, Mastiffs are docile and intelligent dogs. They are very sweet with their owners, and very meek with children. At the same time, they are naturally protective. On seeing strangers approaching, they tend to occupy positions between the newcomer and the master and take acts of defense if necessary. However, they are not vicious, and their actions are usually limited to holding a potential intruder without doing much harm to him or her. However, they do apply their strong teeth in extreme situations.

Mastiffs require regular exercise, but they should not be exposed to excessive strains. These dogs appreciate daily walks and interaction. Mastiffs are good indoors, and they love comfort. They should sleep on soft surfaces in order to prevent calluses and inflammations. Mastiff puppies grow rapidly, so they need a specific and balanced diet. Because they should be fed and exercised in a specific way, they are not recommended for novice dog owners.

Mastiffs are prone to a number of health disorders, such as hip dysplasia, whelping difficulties and gastric torsion. Nursing mothers must be controlled, because Mastiff puppies often get crushed or smothered because of the mother’s heavy weight. In general, mastiffs are healthy, and the have only rare occurrence of Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), cardiomyopathy, elbow dysplasia, ectropion, etc. The Mastiff has a life span of 10-12 years.
